Taller, Smarter & More Sustainable Skyscrapers

TUESDAY APRIL 02, 2019

Today, tall buildings are not only growing taller – they are also becoming smarter, sharper and more sustainable.

The 3rd Annual Australian Smart Skyscrapers Summit is returning to Melbourne in June with a host of key topics and panels, innovative case-studies and local and international field experts set to pinpoint how best to tackle future high-rise projects, from development and design all the way to inception and maintenance.

Drawing from the broader Asia-Pacific region, the architectural intricacies of Vietnam’s Vincom Landmark 81, which at over 460 metres stands as the tallest building in Southeast Asia, will be explored in depth at the summit.

Landmark 81 acts as a blueprint of what a sustainable, dramatic, and yet culturally contextual skyscraper can look like. While the structure provides both striking views and road and water transportation to the Saigon River, its bold pre-fabricated glass facade is UVA-protective, regulates temperature and reduces power consumption. The tower’s design is equipped with LED systems that colourfully transform the building at night, with its overall shape resembling that of a bamboo bundle, Landmark 81 also becomes a love-letter to Vietnamese culture.

Closer to home, the winning design of the highly publicised Southbank by Beulah competition takes inspiration from Melbourne’s parks and open green spaces to create a sustainable garden-like structure, which upon realisation, will be Australia’s tallest building.

Jan Schellhoff, UNStudio Associate Director will explore his firm’s (and COX Architecture’s) winning concept at the summit, aptly titled Green Spine. Reaching over 355 metres upon completion, the mixed-use concept comprises of two towers featuring a twisting geometric glass façade and green terraces. The spine of the smaller tower will twist into a series of outdoor areas filled with gardens and vegetable patches along their facades.

With Green Spine set to house residential, office, hospitality, educational and retail spaces, a prime opportunity arises to enhance social interaction between tenants. UNStudio and COX have responded by designing a podium to connect the two buildings, which will house a school, library, a cinema and a day-care centre, helping to fosters a formation of community among building occupants. When realised, the presence of Green Spine within Southbank will provide the area with a unique burst of nature and act as a vertical city within a city. Schellhoff will explain and analyse exactly how this complex design will be brought to reality.

Beulah International Executive Director Adelene Teh will be joining Schellhoff to provide a developer’s perspective on the Green Spine design. She will analyse how and why her jury crowned UNStudio and COX winners out of 6 other shortlisted designs, also put forth by high-profile international architectural firms. Teh will round out the Green Spine discussion and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of both the design itself, and what developers look for when selecting a future-proof high-rise design.

An array of innovative and timely topics is on the agenda alongside Landmark 81 and Green Spine at this year’s summit. 3 World Trade Center, engineering high-rises smartly and effectively, Melbourne Square, passive-house high-rise design, and panels targeting challenges facing high-rise developers and effective collaboration during the skyscraper design process are just a few topics penned in for this year’s edition.

Whether you are involved in the design, development, engineering or maintenance of high-rise design, this year’s summit will equip you with the knowledge needed to ensure that our skyscrapers become better, smarter, safer and more revolutionary than ever before.

The 3rd Annual Australian Smart Skyscrapers Summit will be held on the 25th and 26th of June, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
