Learn from the International Municipalities & Lighting Bodies Leading the Pack in Smart City Deployment

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 21, 2019

The Australian Smart Lighting Summit is heading back to Melbourne next week, with event attendees set to enjoy insights from four municipalities and lighting bodies leading the global pack in smart city deployment.

Kerney R Marine, Assistant Director at the City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Street Lighting is making the trip to Australia to provide a Californian perspective on the role of smart lighting within smart city frameworks. Marine will provide insights on best-practice solutions for deployment of connected smart lighting, utilising the City of Los Angeles as a blueprint for efficiency and future-focused success.

Representing the EU will be Katia Valerie Banoun, Managing Director at Norwegian Lighting Association Lyskultur. A board member of Lighting Europe, Banoun will unpack how smart lighting should be utilised to aid humans first and foremost, from a uniquely Nordic perspective tailored to suit Australian contexts.

Joining Banoun and Marine at the event will be General Manager of India’s Energy Efficiency Services Limited, Santosh Thakur.

Thakur’s keynote speech will centre around the transformative Street Lighting National Program (SNLP), which has been instrumental in heightening energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness throughout India with streetlight to LED upgrades. To date, nearly 10 million streetlights have been upgraded to LED lights as part of the program, with 6646.81 million units of energy saved since its 2015 inception.

Zooming back west to the US, San Diego’s Smart Lighting Upgrade will be explored by Erik Caldwell, Deputy COO at the City of San Diego’s Smart and Sustainable Communities Branch.

The upgrade has gathered several awards and was even the subject of a 2015 National Geographic documentary on smart cities. Caldwell’s presentation will thus provide attendees with plenty of workable examples for smart lighting deployment that not only illuminates, but that changes the way cities provide services to its citizens.

These four experts will supplement a host of leading local names, lending this year’s Australian Smart Lighting Summit program with a high-profile international flair.

Of the speeches, panel discussions, networking sessions, and lighting awards ceremonies set to occur at the event, each element points to a common goal: gaining the knowledge needed to utilise lighting within broader smart city frameworks, to make our cities smarter, safer, and more cost and energy efficient, even in the most complicated of regulatory and societal frameworks.

The Australian Smart Lighting Summit will be held on the 28th and 29th of August at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
