Infrastructure Victoria’s 30 Year Strategy for the State

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 22, 2016

The 9th Annual Victoria Transport Infrastructure Conference will convene on the 21st and 22nd of March 2017 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Conference is a crucial event in the major transport projects calendar underscoring Key developments and outlooks for the state with valuable input from industry leaders.

This year’s conference will provide a clear vision for the future of major transport, ports, freight as well as rail and road infrastructure projects that will drive economic growth and increase liveability throughout the State, responding to the challenges of population density.

Discussion of Infrastructure Victoria’s 30-year strategy will form a major part of the 9th edition of the Annual Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference highlighting the largest construction and public transport works planned throughout Victoria including road, airport, port and rail redevelopments. Infrastructure Victoria’s Chief Executive Michel Masson will examine emerging needs and pressures across the state.

Major infrastructure projects on the conference agenda include the Melbourne Metro Rail, the Western Distributor and the CityLink Tulla Widening. Innovations including new rail tunnels, freeway upgrades and river crossings will also be under discussion as well as extensive road upgrade overviews.

Providing project updates and timelines for the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, expected to be completed by 2026, Chief Executive Officer Evan Tattersall from the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority will be speaking at the conference on this significant project. Catering for Melbourne’s expected exponential growth, the $10.9 billion tunnel project aims to ease pressure on the City Loop and increase train services.  The project comprises twin rail tunnels connecting the Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines and five new underground stations.

The conference will also survey the $5.5 billion Western Distributor project which will streamline traffic from Geelong to Pakenham, provide a much needed second river crossing and reduce travel times from the West. Under the plan, the West Gate Freeway would be widened and connected to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink and the CBD via Yarraville with a new road tunnel and a bridge over the Maribyrnong River would provide an alternative river crossing to the West Gate Bridge.

The conference will also provide updates on the $1.28 billion CityLink Tulla Widening which would reduce travel times, increase capacity by up to 30% and improve overall safety on the CityLink and the Tullamarine Freeway.

Melbourne’s most frequented train stations may be in for an overhaul in light of rail overcrowding challenges. CEO of Public Transport Victoria, Jeroen Weimar, has reaffirmed the need for station works to cope with increasing patronage and congestion. Discussions are underway to update Southern Cross Station and Flinders Street Station to enable them to cope with the consistently increasing pressures. The state government has committed to a $100 million dollar restoration project to revitalise the 106-year-old Flinders Street Station. The works are part of the $10.9 billion Melbourne Metro Rail tunnel and aim to ease commuter bottlenecks at the station entrances and pave the way for the planned CBD South Station.

The 2-day event is a highly informative and valuable opportunity to network and knowledge share with key industry stakeholders including project managers, consultants, contractors, operators and investors.

Engaging with government and private representatives, conference delegates will learn about short and long-term transport and infrastructure priorities for the state that will enhance social, economic and environmental outcomes in both metropolitan and regional areas.

The 9th Annual Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference features a wide range of panel discussions, Q&A and speaker presentations on the latest updates on the State’s infrastructure projects.

The conference attracts close to 200 delegates each year and continues to be the largest major projects and infrastructure conference within the state.
