Kahramaa makes  presentation on smart power grids

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) recognises the necessity of smart power grids in the country and is keen to partner for solutions to meet energy related requirements in future, a senior official has told the Arab Future Cities Summit 2014.

Making a presentation on “Kahramaa’s Future Power Grids,” technical adviser Mohamed Nagib Omara said the corporation will focus on such crucial aspects as reliability, flexibility, intelligence, electrical and energy issues and effective delivery in service while exploring the possibilities for smart grids in the country.

The Kahramaa adviser said the world electricity market has been witnessing sweeping changes in the last three decades. “Now it has become a consumer-driven market that is seen in many parts of the world. While customers had no say on the service provided by the utility earlier, the companies are now coming to the consumers to serve them,” he added.

Man acquitted of drug possession charge

The Doha Court of Appeal has acquitted a Syrian expatriate of charges of consuming and possessing illicit drug, local daily Arrayah has reported.

The Court of First Instance had earlier sentenced the man to two years in jail and imposed a fine of QR10,000. He was ordered to be deported after serving the jail term.

The Syrian was arrested based on information that he was dealing in illicit drugs such as hashish and Tramadol pills.

According to the charger-sheet, he was arrested while trying to sell banned pills and blood test contained traces of hashish.

The accused admitted that he was in possession of Tramadol pills, but denied taking hashish.

The defence lawyer pleaded that illegal measures were resorted to by authorities concerned to arrest the accused. “The accused was not arrested in action,” he told the court.
