An Australian Smart Lighting Summit Success

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

The 6th Annual Australian Smart Lighting Summit was held on the 11th and 12th September 2018 at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Attended by upwards of 200 delegates, comprised of industry leaders, designers, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, suppliers and government officials, this year’s event proved to be our biggest and best yet.

Ian Dryden Principal - Industrial Design at the City of Melbourne opened the two-day event with a Melbourne update, and later ended day one of the event with an eye-opening City Lights Tour. Dryden returned on Wednesday to participate in the day’s two panel discussions.

Providing an additional peek into the state’s smart lighting infrastructure was Ashish Daga, Team Leader Managed Motorways and ITS, Smart Journey Systems at VicRoads’. Daga explored VicRoads’ first ever performance-based street lighting contract and its application of intelligent lighting fixtures.

Kim Brostrøm, Chief Technology Officer of the Denmark Outdoor Lighting Lab (DOLL), addressed the innovation and possibilities behind smart lighting solutions. Exploring the global possibilities of the lighting lab, Brostrøm presented on the capabilities of smart street lighting fixtures.

Scotty Hutto, Lighting Services Manager for Georgia Power Co., US, discussed the company’s involvement with lighting initiatives in state of Georgia and their conversion of high-intensity discharge (HID) based lighting to LED smart lighting.

Highly anticipated international speaker James Quigley, Senior Street Lighting Engineer for the Bureau of Street Lighting at the City of Los Angeles was unfortunately unable to attend after falling ill just days before the event.

Returning speaker Thomas Walker of SA Power Networks graciously stepped in to present in Mr Quigley’s spot. Walker presented on South Australian smart lighting update’s, discussing lighting initiative’s and lessons learnt.

Providing some perspective from the north, Pamela Bessette, Executive Coordinator for the Energy Management Program at the City of Gold Coast, spoke on the cities foray into smart lighting fixtures in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Day two of the event saw Marc Cassanet, Coordinator Environment and Sustainability from Wyndham City Council present on a unique perspective; the council’s utilisation of smart lighting technology to determine a correlation between the smart city infrastructure and the urban heat island effect.

Recognising excellence and innovation in lighting 3rd Annual Delegate Choice Awards crowned two winners this year; Winning Category One: Most Innovative Product Award was Nikkon for their product the Intelligent Light Control System (iLCS) and winning Category Two: Best Design Award was Ligman Lighting with their product Vancouver.

The 6th Annual Australian Smart Lighting Summit was a huge success with its high calibre of speakers and attendees and we look forward to the 7thedition in August 2019.
